5 Quebec digital experiences for children and families

July 25, 2024

With the development and democratization of access to digital content in the home, the increase in digital resources and uses in the classroom, and the recent deployment of several incentive measures dedicated to youth production (we’re thinking, for example, of the enhanced envelope of $101 million for Télé-Québec in the cultural budget announced in 2023, or the special program of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec specifically dedicated to the creation of an international rendez-vous in youth theater), the production of digital content for younger audiences has the wind in its sails.

Last year, Xn Québec made “digital creativity for young audiences” the focus of its Jam 360 creative event, supporting the ideation and production process of several innovative projects.

Here’s a playful interlude with the (re)discovery of five Quebec digital experiences for children and families!

La Tentaconte

La Tentaconte is a fabulous mobile immersive experience created by the team at Tobo, the renowned studio for the production of digital and audiovisual content for children, and brought to life by storyteller and producer Marc Roberge. Housed in an inflatable dome that comfortably accommodates around 40 people, children are invited to enjoy an experience that combines the intimate with the spectacular, combining a story told by an “in situ” storyteller with immersive, interactive 360° visual and audio accompaniment. La Tentaconte travels the roads of Quebec, reviving the traditional art of storytelling with the help of new technologies, and delighting the very young along the way.

Octocosm[e]

In February 2023, audiovisual artist Vincent Fillion presented the results of a creative project carried out as part of the aforementioned JAM 360. His project, Octocosm[e], which has since been presented at several artistic events, is a digital, interactive, immersive and audiovisual instrument-installation. It invites young audiences (and older ones too!) to play with different noises via an instrumental system combining sound synthesis and experimental video projection. Users can modify the sounds as they wish, in a free and flexible way, putting themselves in a position of experimentation and exploration. A fascinating dreamlike and poetic project!

Le chagrin multicolore

Le chagrin multicolore is a project by production studio couleur.tv and directed by Francis Gélinas, a finalist in the NUMIX 2024 Awards in the Web and Application – Youth and Family category. It features an augmented reality application that follows Ariette, a ghost in search of her lost memory. Children are invited to help Ariette by exploring her house and searching the various rooms. As he explores, Ariette blows him clues and hints as to the relevance of his choices. A brightly colored, playful and tender project for the very young!

Rosy, la tardigrade et le message venu de l’espace (GénieLab )

GénieLab is a Quebec-based company specializing in the creation of innovative objects and experiences for young audiences, with a particular focus on developing their digital skills. GénieLab has signed several projects designed to demystify artificial intelligence and sound creation. Over the past few years, the company has also been developing a series of boxes dedicated to scientific learning, combining online courses and computer creation kits. For example, the Rosy Kit, created in collaboration with the Montreal Planetarium, invites children to discover the basics of astronomy by accompanying the tardigrade Rosy on her space travels! Young users are challenged by a micro:bit nano-computer to warn the Earth of an extraterrestrial signal, providing opportunities to develop skills in coding, programming, circuits and electricity. An innovative and engaging experience!

Au bord du lac tranquille

More family-oriented than specifically aimed at young audiences, the Au bord du lac tranquille experience (finalist for the Prix Numix 2023, in the In situ – Installation category) offers a new way to enjoy winter games in an urban context. Conceived by Quebec companies mirari and Normal Studio and presented as part of the 13th edition of Luminothérapie, in 2023, it transforms the outdoor skating rink on the Esplanade tranquille, in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles, into a visual and interactive experience exploring Quebec’s marine ecosystems. Twice a night, users discover scenes of underwater life projected onto the ice. Through their sliding movements, they also become actors, creating eddies, snow trails or being chased by schools of fish! This unique work has already amazed thousands of skaters, and we’re sure it will continue to do so in the winters to come!
