Case Study | MUTEK: Toward More Responsible and Sustainable Events

Case Study | MUTEK: Toward More Responsible and Sustainable Events
January 8, 2026

Founded in 2000, MUTEK is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and developing emerging forms of digital sound, music, and visual art. Its mission is to provide artists with a platform to raise their profile and help them take their creative concepts as far as possible.

Now in its 20th year, the six-day festival in Montreal has grown in maturity and influence. The 2024 edition featured 87 performances by 142 artists and welcomed more than 62,000 festivalgoers. A festival of MUTEK Montréal’s scale inevitably has an environmental impact.

Since 2011, MUTEK has implemented various environmental initiatives, particularly related to waste management and offsetting its GHG emissions. In 2023, the organization obtained BNQ Level 3 certification ( out of a possible 5), attesting to its commitment and its numerous initiatives in support of environmental sustainability.

The standard is based on 56 requirements divided into five areas: supplier selection; management of materials, energy sources, and water; waste management; and food and transportation choices.

Previously subject to certification and an annual audit, the BNQ 9700-253 standard—updated in 2024—can now be adopted voluntarily and proactively by organizations.

For example, in 2023, 88% of MUTEK suppliers’ headquarters and branches were located within a 100-km radius. As for the production equipment for the festival and forum, most of it was rented from local companies located within 25 km of the venues, while MUTEK’s food offerings are 100% vegetarian.

Investments

For a nonprofit organization or a festival, this is first and foremost an investment decision, since this choice involves allocating a portion of resources to the certification process, at the expense of other aspects such as event production.

In addition, establishing the methodology for collecting data from suppliers, partners, and festivalgoers, as well as the efforts involved in compiling and analyzing that data, are part of the annual mandate of a sustainability project manager, who is on staff for approximately three to four months. This role encompasses a broader range of tasks than just data collection. The various funding programs available—notably those offered by RECYCQUÉBEC—have so far provided financial support for this position, making it more accessible for an organization with limited capacity.

The Benefits

Beyond recognizing the efforts of the entire team and the partners involved, this initiative not only enhanced the festival’s sustainable practices but also positioned it as an ambassador for sustainability among its participants. It has brought a new sense of coherence to initiatives that might previously have seemed scattered, embedding them at the heart of MUTEK’s identity.
