Our members honoured in 2024

December 20, 2024

It’s no secret, but it’s always good to be reminded: Quebec’s digital production sector shines with dynamism, creativity and originality. The sheer volume of players in this ecosystem, the number and diversity of productions, the wide variety of technologies explored, make the province a superb showcase for the very best in digital creativity.

This know-how is regularly recognized by international industry professionals, both in the many collaborations offered to Quebec creators, and in the numerous awards presented to Quebec productions. This year, a number of Quebec projects stood out in the most prestigious international competitions.

CODAwards

Many Quebec projects were honored this year! Starting with the fabulous River Lines, developed by Montreal studio Daily tous les jours for HIP Developments, grand winner of the CODAwards “Landscape” category in 2024. Installed in the city of Cambridge, Ontario, this project offers passers-by an interactive floor for the collective creation of sound and visual works.

In the Public Spaces category, Moment Factory won for its Hub Créatif project at 1001 Robert-Bourassa in Montreal, an immersive, interactive lobby combining sound, video, light and reactive projections.

For its part, the Horizon project, produced by Init and powered by Creos in 2023 in the town of St-Bruno de Montarville, earned a place in the CODAwards Top 100. Horizon is a poetic, immersive outdoor installation featuring luminous, enveloping “cocoons” inviting serenity and calm. To find out more about this experience, read the case study published by L’Effet Québec.

New-York Radio Festival Awards 2024

The New-York Radio Festival Awards 2024 also saw an exceptional crop of prizes for Quebec podcast creators this year. These included a Gold Award in the “Musical Program” category for the production “Entre Carole et Lewis” (Radio-Canada, Ici Musique), a Silver Award in the “Interview” category for the program “Janette Bertrand et ses perles de sagesse” (Radio-Canada) and a Bronze Award in the “Documentary Podcast” category for the superb project “Résistance” (Radio-Canada). The latter production also won the Prix Numix in 2023 in the “Podcast – History, Culture and Science” category.

Oto’s Planet

Virtual reality, augmented reality and interactive reality were also in the spotlight! Several other projects stood out this year, including the multi-award-winning Oto’s Planet, from studios Skill Lab, Dpt and Small Creative. This experience, combining augmented reality, virtual reality and a narrative proposition, takes us on an explosive and interactive space adventure of great beauty. For its highly innovative and immersive nature, Oto’s Planet won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival (Venice), the Grand Prize at the Beyond the Frame Festival (Japan), the Best Immersive Experience Award at the GIFF Festival (Geneva), the Immersive Film Award at the Manchester Animation Festival (Manchester), the Best XR Experience Award at the Byron Bay International Film Festival (Byron) and the Best Visual Experience Award at the Stereopsia Festival (Brussels).

Laurels for our members

In the same vein, Felix & Paul, in collaboration with Time Studios and Meta Quest, have been nominated for a Webby Award for their virtual reality space adventure project Space Explorers – Blue Marble Trilogy.

The Roaming project, by La prairie productions, Wild Fang Films, Normal Studio and Small Creative, an interactive virtual reality experience that plunges us into a dark, breathtaking universe, has been selected for the immersive section of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

We’re in a similar mood with the VFC project, an “adaptive and augmented horror cinema experience” signed by Scintilla, winner of two FIVARS awards, the first for its sound experience and the second for its technical prowess.

Finally, still in the category of immersive and interactive experiences, the Les pieds en haut : Louby the collective Les pieds en haut (Martine Asselin and Annick Daigneault ), offering a sensitive insight into a child on the autism spectrum’s view of the world, was awarded the Honorary Prize (Youth Division) at the Japan Prize festival, the Virtual Reality Audience Prize and Special Critics’ Mention at the Visioni Dal Mundo festival (Milan), the Impact en immersif prize at the SIMA awards and the Artist in the Community prize from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Last but not least, the Musée de la civilisation de Québec‘s formidable exhibition Unique en son genre, focusing on gender diversity, won the Prix d’excellence de la Société des musées du Québec (SMQ) and the Prix Jeannette Bertrand.
Of course, these few projects are far from representing the full extent of Quebec’s digital creativity! As we know (and as we found out from the Habo study in this article), Quebec productions stand out in every field, from online creation to the implementation of in situ interactive experiences.
